Minecraft Better Villages mod, the village generation overhaul

Loaders: Fabric + Forge, parallel builds · MC: 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.20.1

Better Minecraft cross-biome view showing villages, animals and airship

What the Better Villages mod does

Better Villages replaces vanilla Minecraft's tiny scattered village layouts with proper settlements. Every biome gets its own set of ten-plus building variants, roofed markets, town wells, watch-towers, walled gardens, blacksmiths, libraries and inn buildings. Villages generate with roads, plazas, and defensive walls, plains villages get palisades, taiga villages get log fortifications, desert villages get sandstone perimeter walls.

The mod also adds job-site structures that were missing from vanilla, brewery, weaponsmithy, herbalist hut, so villagers actually have workplaces for their profession-locked trades. This makes Better Villages a natural pairing with any villager-AI overhaul, they are both bundled in the Better Minecraft modpack.

YUNG's Better Villages is the community-favourite implementation and the one referred to on this page. There is a Fabric and Forge parallel build for every supported Minecraft version.

Features

Biome-specific layouts

Plains, desert, savanna, taiga, snowy tundra and jungle each have their own set of village pieces. Nothing is copy-pasted across biomes.

Ten-plus house variants per biome

Every village pulls from a pool of ten or more house designs, no two adjacent villages look the same. Interiors are furnished with beds, chests, crafting stations.

Defensive structures

Palisades, watch-towers, town gates and archer platforms. Raids now have a real defensive layer, no more one-block-wide village walls.

New job sites

Brewery, weaponsmithy, herbalist hut, cartographer's tent, fisher pier. Unlocks trades that vanilla profession-locks to buildings that never generate.

Structure-detection compatibility

Villages register with vanilla structure detection, /locate structure minecraft:village finds them, cartographer maps point at them.

Better Villages FAQ

Do existing villages get replaced?

No. Better Villages only affects newly-generated chunks. Old villages in an existing world stay vanilla.

Do Better Villages spawn raids?

Yes, vanilla raid mechanics fire the same way. The new defensive walls and watch-towers make raids meaningfully harder for pillagers to breach.

Does it work with villager mods?

Yes. Better Villages adds structures, villager mods add behaviour, they layer cleanly. Pairs well with Guard Villagers, Easy Villagers and Better Villagers.

Does the mod add trades?

No, trades stay vanilla. It adds the missing job-site blocks so villagers can access the professions vanilla otherwise blocks.
