What is the Better Minecraft modpack?

Better Minecraft is the largest all-in-one overhaul modpack for Minecraft Java Edition. Where vanilla Minecraft gives you one Overworld, one Nether and one End with a limited mob roster, Better Minecraft adds hundreds of biomes, dozens of dimensions, a full combat rework, a rebuilt animation layer, and drop-in performance mods that hold 60+ FPS on average hardware.

The whole thing installs with one click from CurseForge, Modrinth, ATLauncher or Prism. You pick your Minecraft version (1.16.5, 1.18.2, 1.19.2 or 1.20.1), the launcher pulls every mod plus its dependencies, and you get a Minecraft profile that looks and plays like a proper 2024 game, not a 2011 sandbox.

This site is a directory: the main page covers the modpack itself and the sub-pages break down every individual "better" mod bundled into it, better combat, better villages, better nether, better foliage, better PvP and the rest. Each sub-page is a self-contained guide, click through from the mod list below.

Supported Minecraft versions

Better Minecraft ships a separate build per Minecraft version. Pick the row that matches your install. Every build shares the same mod philosophy, the exact mod list varies as some mods are Fabric-only or Forge-only on specific MC versions.

How to install Better Minecraft

  1. 01

Open CurseForge, Modrinth, ATLauncher or Prism Launcher on your PC. Any of the four works, CurseForge is the largest, Prism is the leanest.

  2. 02

Search "Better Minecraft" in the launcher's browse-modpacks tab. Filter by Minecraft version (1.20.1 is the recommended build).

  3. 03

Click Install. The launcher pulls Fabric (or Forge), every mod plus every dependency, and creates a new profile called Better Minecraft.

  4. 04

Allocate 6-8 GB of RAM to the profile in the launcher's memory settings, defaults are usually 2-4 GB which is not enough for 250 mods.

  5. 05

Launch the profile. First boot takes 60-120 seconds while the shader cache builds. Subsequent launches are fast.

  6. 06

For multiplayer: run the same modpack build on the server. Server hosts (Apex, BisectHosting, Shockbyte) all offer one-click Better Minecraft server installs.

Performance stack

The Better Minecraft modpack ships Sodium (or Embeddium on Forge), Lithium, Better FPS, FerriteCore and Starlight preinstalled. On mid-range hardware, that stack alone doubles vanilla frame rates before you touch a shader. On a 6 GB profile the pack idles at 60-90 FPS on the Overworld and stays above 45 FPS during 20-mob combat, which is well above what vanilla plus 250 raw mods would give you.

If you plan to run shaders (Complementary, BSL, Sildur's) on top, add 2 GB to the RAM allocation and expect a 30-50% FPS hit. Iris Shaders is bundled on Fabric, Oculus is bundled on Forge, both auto-detect installed shader packs from your shaders folder.

Better Minecraft FAQ

Is Better Minecraft on Bedrock?

No. Better Minecraft is a Java Edition modpack, it depends on Fabric or Forge, which do not exist on Bedrock. No official Bedrock port is planned.

Which Minecraft version should I install?

1.20.1 is the recommended build, the mod list is the largest and it is still receiving updates. 1.19.2 is the long-term-stable pick if you want a build that will not change under you.

How much RAM does Better Minecraft need?

6 GB minimum, 8 GB recommended, 10 GB if you plan to run shaders on top. Default launcher allocations of 2-4 GB will crash on world load.

Does Better Minecraft work on servers?

Yes. The same mod manifest runs on server and client. Every major host (Apex, BisectHosting, Shockbyte) offers a one-click Better Minecraft server install.

Fabric or Forge?

Fabric first, Forge as a parallel build. Fabric ships with the best performance stack (Sodium + Lithium), Forge has broader legacy mod coverage. Pick Fabric unless you need a specific Forge-only mod.

Can I add my own mods on top?

Yes, drop extra jars into the profile's mods folder. Watch for mod-loader mismatches (a Forge mod will not load on a Fabric build) and dependency conflicts.

Where do I download Better Minecraft?

From CurseForge, Modrinth, ATLauncher or Prism only. Avoid third-party download sites, they often bundle adware or serve outdated builds.
