Better Third Person mod for Minecraft, the camera rework

Loaders: Fabric + Forge, parallel builds · MC: 1.19.2, 1.20.1

Character-forward third-person view in a Minecraft biome with mounted airship

What the Better Third Person mod does

Better Third Person replaces vanilla's locked centred third-person camera with a proper over-the-shoulder framing you can freelook around. Your character stays facing forwards while the camera orbits, so you can scout, dodge and aim ranged shots without your body needlessly turning. The camera shoulder-swaps on request (left, right, centre), stays out of walls with a smart occlusion check, and integrates with Better Combat's directional attacks so you attack where you are looking, not where you are facing.

The mod is bundled in Better Minecraft alongside Better Combat, together they turn Minecraft into a genuine action-camera game. Standalone install below.

Features

Freelook camera

Hold a keybind (default F5 modifier) to rotate the camera without rotating the player body. Useful for scouting, dodging and ranged aim.

Over-shoulder framing

Camera sits off-centre over one shoulder, character occupies bottom-third of frame like a proper action game.

Shoulder swap

Toggle keybind swaps camera to the opposite shoulder. Also swaps automatically when the current shoulder would clip through a wall.

Wall occlusion

Camera pulls in smoothly when the player backs into a wall, no clipping-through-blocks vertigo.

Combat integration

Auto-hooks with Better Combat directional attacks, sword swings hit where the camera is aimed, not where the body faces.

Better Third Person FAQ

Does it break bows and crossbows?

No. Ranged aim uses camera direction, so aiming with the over-shoulder framing is more accurate than vanilla third-person.

Can I use it in first-person?

No. Better Third Person is exclusively a third-person camera mod. First-person still uses vanilla.

Best keybind setup?

F5 for camera-swap (vanilla), Alt for freelook (hold), C for shoulder-swap (tap). Matches common action-game layouts.

Does it work in multiplayer?

Yes, the mod is client-side only. No server install required, other players do not need the mod.
