What the Better Than Wolves mod does
Better Than Wolves is FlowerChild's legendary total-conversion mod for Minecraft Java, one of the oldest and most respected mods in the ecosystem. It replaces vanilla progression with a proper tech tree, mechanical power (windmills, waterwheels, gearboxes), pottery, brewing, animal husbandry rework, and dozens of new crafting stations. The progression is intentionally punishing, every recipe demands multiple prerequisite crafts, and the mod locks vanilla features (like nether portals and enchanting) behind mid-tier tech.
The mod is famously bound to Minecraft 1.5.2. FlowerChild refused to port to modern versions, arguing later Mojang updates broke design intent. As a result, Better Than Wolves is a legacy install, you run it on a dedicated 1.5.2 profile alongside the mod's own launcher.
It is included on this site because it is a foundational "better X" mod and remains actively maintained in its 1.5.2 form. It is not bundled in the modern Better Minecraft modpack, since those two run on different Minecraft versions.
Features
Mechanical power
Windmills, waterwheels and hand cranks generate torque. Torque routes through axles and gearboxes to drive millstones, saws, pumps and grinders. It is the first Minecraft tech mod, released before IndustrialCraft.
Reworked animal husbandry
Chickens lay eggs on schedule, cows produce milk from feeding cycles, wolves bond via a real training system. Meat and hides drop with quality tiers.
Pottery, brewing, cooking
A crafted pottery wheel produces bowls, urns and mugs. A brewing kettle runs multi-step ferments. A cooking pit chains ingredients into stews and stocks.
Locked vanilla progression
Nether portals, enchanting, redstone circuits and iron tools are gated behind tech-tree progress. You do not skip tiers.
Custom mob behaviour
Every hostile mob gets AI upgrades. Zombies break doors, skeletons flank, creepers ambush. Difficulty is measurably higher than 1.5.2 vanilla.
